Helena Bonham Carter To Receive CBE Honour

Oscar-nominated actress Helena Bonham Carter has been awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire medal (Cbe) in Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s Honours list.

The Brit, who portrayed the Queen’s mother in The King’s Speech, has been recognised for her career achievements and will be presented with the accolade during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London next year.

TV mogul Peter Bazalgette, the producer credited with turning reality show Big Brother into an international phenomenon, is to receive a knighthood, while author Penelope Lively, who won the Booker Prize for 1987′s Moon Tiger, will be made a Dame, according to Reuters.

Veteran British comedian Ronnie Corbett will be feted with a CBE, while golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke are to pick up Member of the British Empire (MBE) and Officer of the British Empire (OBE), respectively.

The annual New Year’s Honours list acknowledges the public service of British and Commonwealth citizens in a variety of fields including entertainment, industry and government.

Helena accepts Role Model of the Year Award in absentia

When we heard Helena Bonham Carter would be unable to attend the Bazaar Women of the Year Awards last night, our hearts sank a little – however, Helena sent a little piece of herself to the glittering ceremony at Claridge’s.

Due to filming commitments – Helena is currently starring as Miss Haversham in the BBC’s eagerly anticipated Great Expectations remake – the BAFTA award-winning King’s Speech actress was not able to accept her award for Role Model of the Year in person but sent co-star Sally Hawkin’s with a letter to read:

Dear all,

I will still be Miss Havishaming as you glug your drinks and I’ll have to be up at 5.00 again to get the bridal gear on in order that they can set fire to me (do you know the story?). So Tuesday’s a big day and every bride must get her beauty sleep.

Anyway, please know that under any other circumstances I would have been there and thank you for this compliment. “Role Model of The Year” sounds fantastically heroic. I have no idea what I have done to fulfill this description. It reminds me of a letter I got from a young female fan in which she enumerates “25 things Helena Bonham Carter has taught her”. It starts with things like “dreaming big”, “believing in yourself”, “creating your own style not other peoples”, and that “it’s socially acceptable to wear several hats all at once.” But the one I loved best was No. 25 which was “it’s ok to have short thick legs”.

Now, I think if I’ve helped make someone love their short thick legs then – yes – I DO feel I’ve been heroic. So thank you so much. I do deserve this.

Much love from Miss Havisham World. She doesn’t – after all – get out that much.

And this is why she is our Role Model of the Year. Helena, Bazaar loves you.

Helena Bonham Carter to be Honored at BAFTA Awards

Helena Bonham Carter will be honored with the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA Los Angeles) at the BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards in November.

“Helena Bonham Carter is an actress of immense versatility, and her range across movies of all genres is at once remarkable and fearless,” Nigel Lythgoe, Chairman of BAFTA Los Angeles, told the Hollywood Reporter.

“She unwaveringly maintains her integrity and, through her choice of roles, continually challenges both herself and her audiences’ perception of her,” Lythgoe continued.

Bonham Carter received an Academy Award nomination for her 2010 performance in The King’s Speech as Elizabeth, the wife of King George VI. That same performance earned her nominations from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, and she won BAFTA and British Independent Film Awards for her performance. She was first nominated for an Oscar for the 1997 film The Wings of the Dove, based on a novel by Henry James.

Bonham Carter’s other credits include Fight Club, Alice in Wonderland, and Howard’s End. She also plays Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter series.

Her next role will be as Dr. Julia Hoffman in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, scheduled to hit theaters in May of 2012.
